Dumb, Dumber And Just Plain Stupid

I've just been watching Sky Sports News and revelling in the predicament that England find themselves in, when the presenters went through the various permutations. I didn't appreciate that a body such as FIFA, in the most prestigious sporting event anywhere in the world, could, under certain circumstances decide who continues in the competition by drawing lots. At least not without taking other things into account.

Here's the exact procedure taken from the FIFA website...

The ranking of each team in each group will be determined as follows:

a) greatest number of points obtained in all group matches;
b) goal difference in all group matches;
c) greatest number of goals scored in all group matches.

If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above three criteria,
their rankings will be determined as follows:

d) greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the
teams concerned;
e) goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams
concerned;
f) greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams
concerned;
g) drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee.

The teams finishing first and second in each group will qualify for the Round
of 16.

Surely, with so many statistics gathered in these games, the drawing of lots should be much further down the alphabet than the letter G?

Why not reward attacking play by taking into account number of shots on target, the number of corners won? Or punish foul play by counting the number of cautions received? There's a long list of stats that could be taken into account before the need to draw lots.

While I relish the idea of England being put out of the competition on the draw of a hat simply because it would be very amusing, can you imagine the furore? We'd never hear the end of it. It would be as bad as having to put up with that 1966 drivel that we are continually subjected to.

Seriously, I wouldn't want any team to be put out in such a manner, not when there are so many steps that could be taken in between. Having said that, it really should come as no surprise that FIFA wouldn't take a sensible approach. After all, their President is Sepp Blatter!
