A Trip Down Memory Lane

With the kids packed off to spend Christmas with others I've had the day to myself and little to do. A new version of Fairbot was released yesterday so I thought I'd spend some time familiarising myself with the updated facilities.

Betfair markets were thin on the ground today and I found myself spending the afternoon with the dogs. It was like visiting a long lost friend.

It's been some time since I ventured into the greyhound markets. Those of you who have read some of my older posts may recall that I did rather well in the dog markets when I first started this malarkey. I moved on to other things as I found myself spending 9-10 hours a day watching and trading the dog markets. Although I made some decent returns they didn't justify the effort I was putting in.

Utilising some of the new functionality in Fairbot I spent the afternoon dutching the dog markets rather than trading them. Using variable liabilities  between 1-10 points I finished the day 22 points up losing 5 out of 13 races and a ROI of some 29%.

I'm very happy with that return and certainly keen to try the strategy out again. A future attempt will have to wait until Christmas is out of the way though.

Have a good one and don't eat too much.

Best Laid Plans?

Continuing my investigations into other markets, I find myself increasingly drawn to those with only two outcomes. As a result, darts is one of those sports I'm targeting along with limited over cricket, tennis and snooker. There are others, but I think that's enough to be getting on with.

With the PDC Players Championship currently being shown on ITV4 this weekend, I spent yesterday paper trading the matches while watching the action. Other than the odd game in the pub - a long time ago when I used to frequent such establishments - darts has never attracted me as a sport. Judging by what I witnessed on Friday, I've been missing out on some excellent entertainment.

My paper trading went well enough to encourage me to get involved for small stakes during the second round matches this afternoon and evening. Needless to say, I promptly lost on the first three games. A combination of me being greedy and the matches being so one-sided (the complete opposite of what I'd seen the previous round) which meant that the positions I took were always going to be difficult to get out of.

Having said that, in two of those losing matches I had the opportunity to green up for a reasonable ROI but I didn't. Greed set in.

After giving myself a wrap on the knuckles and adjusting my expectations somewhat, the remaining four matches I took part in all returned a profit. I'm still down on the tournament, but I'm quickly homing in on a strategy that I believe will be profitable long term as well as identifying those matches I should be leaving alone.

I confess, I'm finding myself enjoying these new avenues. Even though I'm essentially starting again from scratch, exploring new sports while learning their markets on Betfair, I am enthused about trading again. Something I had lost for quite a while when concentrating on the horse markets.

I'm still spending far too much time in front of a computer screen, but I think that is a necessary sacrifice while getting to grips with new markets. Hopefully, that will lessen over time....

Who am I kidding?

Cricket Trading - Learning Something New

SA v Pakistan T20
Continuing my cricket journey, I managed to get on a decent early swing in the South Africa v Pakistan match yesterday which left me all green and comfortable for the rest of the match.

I laid SA at 1.29 (indicated in green) then sat back and watch as it climbed to my exit point at 1.86 (in blue). I left it at that as I couldn't make up my mind mid-match whether to get involved again.

The main purpose of this post, however is to make mention of the part of the graph circled in black. This frenzied activity happened when there was no play due to rain and the players were off the pitch.

Just into the 9th over of the 2nd innings the heavens opened and play was stopped. For a while the market sat at a little under 1.20 then some wild and not insignificant movements took place. The graph might give the impression that these moves were quick and sudden. Not so. That encircled part of the graph represents some 20-25 mins which saw a huge amount of trading.

I obviously saw it happening but was reluctant to get involved until I understood the reasons. I've rarely seen such trading in other sports when competitors are not on the field of battle.

With the rain coming down and only a quarter of the match remaining I presumed that it was probably due to the recalculation of the target score for Pakistan using the Duckworth Lewis formula. (Thanks to Mark Iverson for confirming my suspicions on Twitter).

The movements in the market were further influenced by the rain abating and, for a short time at least, the market feeling that there might be further play.

The Duckworth Lewis formula is, as I understand it, not available to the general public. Any trader who does possess that information could get on the right side of the market a little earlier than everyone else. Having said that, there was plenty of opportunity yesterday for those like me to jump on the bandwagon so it is clearly something one should look out for.

That sums up what is great about this trading malarky. There's always something new to learn. Tuck it away and keep for a rainy day - quite literally in this case.

It has been a very quite week this week with only a spot of cricket trading to keep me a wake - though I shouldn't have bothered have reduced my bank a little. All part of the learning curve.

On the football front, with it being an International weekend and consequently no EPL there's no correct score dutches. Back again for those next weekend. Even the Back or Lay selections are very quiet, though I do have one lined up for Sunday. Stay tuned for that.

The usual eclectic mix for the weekend selections. Remember, I'm recording these as straight bets which are showing a small profit for the season. Cricket Trials Continue

Bangladesh v New Zealand T20
Bangladesh v New Zealand T20
Continuing with my cricketing exploits today with a foray into the world of T20.

When looking at the graph for New Zealand with two overs left in the match it is clear that there were loads of excellent trading opportunities to be had. Yet I only came away with 10p!

I'm not really sure how, other than lack of patience. Having come from faster trading markets such as pre-race horses I think it will take me a while to get used to the much greater timescales. The more I watch and get involved in these markets to small stakes, the quicker that confidence will come.

I was certainly out far too soon having laid New Zealand at the start of the second innings - in that first sub 1.10 dip in the graph. A lesson learned and I'll grit my teeth a little harder next time.

Ladbrokes Enters The Exchange Market

Ladbrokes enters the exchange market
Announcement from Betdaq
It's an announcement that has been common knowledge for some time, but how will Ladbrokes involvement in the Exchange industry affect traders and the markets in general?

There is no doubt that a major liquidity boost at Betdaq will help to reduce, if not breakup Betfair's monopoly. Something that traders in particular have been screaming out for particularly since Betfair introduced their infamous Premium Charge. Having got away with the initial incarnation of the PC, they've gone on to grab more and done so with relative impunity.

Fortunately (or should that be unfortunately?) I've never been hit by the Premium Charge, though I've never agreed with it. I make a point of avoiding any kind of monopoly as much as I can, irrespective of the industry. So, in terms of trading/gambling, I pass as much of my custom to Betdaq as is possible.

While the breakup of any monopoly is a good thing, I fear that the art of trading is in for a bumpy ride and all traders will need to adapt. While a liquidity boost at Betdaq will undoubtedly be welcomed by all traders I think long term both exchanges will converge in liquidity levels, reducing at Betfair and increasing at Betdaq and becoming more 'balanced'.

Having other options can only be good for the customer, but we are likely to end up with two exchanges with liquidity levels less than the monopolistic Betfair currently have. Unless the pool of traders and punters can be increased significantly - and let's face it, that particular pond is limited in size - I don't see it happening.

It will be interesting to see how the markets on both sites change in the long term. There are certain to be new trading opportunities for those who are able to respond to those changing conditions.

Using BetTrader Evolution From Any Device

RacingTraders
Please note that I do not use BetTrader Evolution so this is not intended as an endorsement or recommendation. You should make up your own mind if this software meets your trading requirements by downloading the BetTrader Evolution software and trying it yourself.

These instructions are for the installation of the software on a Linux based server, specifically, one running Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS. The instructions will be much the same for other versions of Linux. Also, the basic principle of using Evolution in this mode will apply to any Windows based installations - just note that I have no intention of testing this on Windows.

1. Log in to your Linux server either directly or through an SSH terminal session.

2. Download the software by typing in the following command:

wget http://application.racingtraders.co.uk/_evolution/linux/3.0.5/bettrader_ubuntu.tar

3. Type the following and press ENTER:

tar -xvf bettrader_ubuntu.tar

(Note that you should change ubuntu to the Linux distro name you have downloaded if different)

The software is now installed on your server, however, you may need to modify one of the javascript files that make the software work.

4. Open the following file in your favourite text editor:

~/.BetTraderEvolution/htdocs/scripts/bettraderevolution.js

5. Using the find and replace commands, search for all occurrences of 127.0.0.1 and replace it with the IP address of your server then save the file.

Before you can access BetTrader Evolution from any device on your network, you must start the Evolution server service. This can be done from your SSH terminal session

1. Type in the following and press ENTER:

cd ~/BetTraderEvolution

2. Type in the following and press ENTER:

./bettrader

You should get the following message appearing in your terminal window:

BetTrader Evolution is running.
Launch your browser and visit http://127.0.0.1:9080 to start trading.

You are now ready to run Evolution from any device on your network by loading up its web browser. However, don't use the http://127.0.01:9080 as indicated by the above message. Instead, substitute the 127.0.0.1 with your server's IP address.

Note, to save you the hassle of having to start and stop the BetTrader Evolution service on your server each time, you could, theoretically have it running permanently. Just remember to log off when you are done trading.

Any device with a web browser installed and remote access to your server should be able to use BetTrader Evolution. Just keep in mind that screen real estate on a smart phone or tablet will be severely limited.

Trading App For Android

Having read an excellent review in the latest edition of the MicroMart computing magazine, I've just ordered one of the new Hudl tablets from Tesco. At £119 for a 7" tablet purchasing a Hudl was described as a no-brainer by the reviewer.

To be honest, I've never had any intention of buying a tablet. Having played with my daughter's Samsung, I cannot say I've been struck down in excitement. Complete hype if you ask me.

So why have I relented?

The clincher was that the Hudl qualified for Tesco's double up voucher scheme. I had £45 worth of unused Clubcard vouchers sitting in my account, so, in effect, I got it for £74 - an even bigger no brainer. I just need to find some sensible uses for it now other than catch up TV.

There's one thing that I will use it for; a replacement remote for my smart TV. It will make it much easier to use the TV for browsing the Internet thanks to the LG Android app available in the Google Play Store.

The other obvious role, given that this blog is supposed to be about trading/gambling rather than consumer electronics advice, is to put the tablet to use as a tool for betting in-play while I'm watching live sports.

To that end, if anyone can recommend any Android based trading apps for Betfair and Betdaq I'd be grateful.

What A Twit!

Will wonders never cease? I've finally got around to creating an account on Twitter.

I guess I'll have to start thinking of things to twit about. The most obvious of these will be a record of my various football strategies. How long will it last? Who knows?

To be honest, I've never really had the inclination to get involved in the World of Twitter. From what I've seen and heard, it seems to stuffed to the gunnells with idle tittle-tattle. Nothing more than a huge waste of time. Still, I'm not one to knock something unless I've tried it so here I am.

Look out for my correct score dutch picks. At the moment, I concentrate on the EPL, so there won't be anything for a week thanks to the Internationals being on this weekend.

Horse Race Bot Scripts For Sale - Any Interest?

I have a number of php based scripts that run on my server automatically and are used to retrieve past horse race results as well as data for the races being held that day. Additional calculations are made and recorded for future analysis.

All the data is recorded in a MySQL database.

The main scripts consist of the following:

  1. GetTodaysHorseRaceRunners.php - This pulls in the event information via the free API and sticks them into a temporary table in the database. It also scrapes the TimeForm race card for additional information.
  2. SessionManagement.php - As the various scripts are running most of the day, this keeps the session alive.
  3. GetPreOffPrices.php - This records the pre-off prices for each race at one minute intervals from 5 mins out.
  4. GetBetfairData.php - This downloads the horse race results for the previous day, copies that data into the database and calculates the 8 lowest recorded odds in running. This provides very useful analysis material for a number of strategies such as 'Lay The Field'.

These four scripts are scheduled to run automatically at set times each day. The first runs in the morning, collecting all the data used by subsequent scripts. The 2nd and 3rd fire up ten minutes before the first scheduled race and continue until the last race of the day. The 4th runs late in the evening.

There's a whole host of other scripts that I do not run all the time, including one for finding course specialists and potential dobbers as well as the one for displaying the graph for each runner in a race as discussed in an earlier post.

Though all these scripts are in a usable state for me, many of them would need 'tidying up' before I made them available to the public.

I'm proposing to sell these scripts as well as the database design. First though, I need to establish if there's any interest. If not, then there's no need for me to think about tidying things up for public release.

Please let me know by posting a comment below. If the interest is there I'll be encouraged to get them prepared for release and subsequent sale in two or three months.

Betfair Graphs

Looking at multiple Betfair graphs within Fairbot is rather cumbersome and takes up a lot of screen real-estate. Besides, I prefer to use the Fairbot graphing functionality to view the streaming graph of the runner I'm interested in.

Still, it's useful to be able to look at all the Betfair graphs at once to get a quick overview of the market so I quickly knocked up a little web page to do the job for me. It's a bit rough and ready at the moment, but it does the job.

A quick nod to my old chat room chum Steve who showed me his version ages ago and I'm only now getting around to doing my own.

Good Customer Service

I can't believe this is the first time I've posted since last June and only a handful of posts in the past year. I've been so busy doing other things that this blog has, I'm sorry to say, been somewhat neglected. I'm afraid that situation won't change much any time soon though I will endeavour to put a bit more time into it.

Meanwhile, I just wanted to show my appreciation for the support I received from the developers of Fairbot.

As regular readers will know (assuming they are still around) I use Linux as my preferred operating system and Fairbot is the only trading application that is still supported for operation on my favourite OS.

A new version was released recently with which I had a problem. It was hogging the CPU, causing the cooling fan to go into overdrive. A quick email to the developers, Binteko, and the issue was resolved within twenty four hours.

It is always good to see great customer service, but especially so when developers are supporting products that run on Linux.

Pay a visit to Binteko and check out Fairbot.
