New Year Resolutions

Taking some time out with my feet up and a cup of tea in hand I find myself contemplating the year ahead and my plans for it. I've never really been one for new year resolutions, or should I say keeping them, but it can be worthwhile jotting some ideas down.

PERSONAL:
1. Make a concerted effort to find work. I've been self-employed for 21 years and I'm sick of it. The recession has been particularly difficult and I find myself having to rebuild the business when I don't really have much enthusiasm for it anymore.
2. Finally get around to building my own hifi amp. Something I've wanted to do since finishing my BSc in electrical and electronic engineering way back in 1984 but other commitments always got in the way.
3. Get back to painting. I used to paint many moons ago as a way to wind down and relieve the stress of the day. Now that I have a dedicated workshop/studio, I have no excuses other than finding the time.

TRADING:
I've not done much trading in 2014 due to other commitments. I spent a lot of time travelling to watch my daughter compete in show jumping and dressage events and even more time doing a lot of work on my house - both inside and out. Fortunately, most of the big jobs are now complete so I should find some more time to trade.

1. Redesign and build my database for horseracing. I was actually thinking of doing this as a tutorial on the blog so stay tuned for that.
2. Set aside some time to experiment in other sports. I've been a member of Tradeshark's tennis site since forever but done nothing about it. So tennis, football and cricket are still sports I'd like to get more into if time allows.
3. Do more videos. After setting up a dedicated YouTube channel, there was a flurry of videos unleashed in the early part of the year which ground to a halt as my house renovations kicked in.

I was almost tempted to add another attempt at pre-race horse trading to that list but thought better of it. Been there, done that and failed miserably more than once.

There's probably others I could add to the list but can't think of any at the moment. No doubt I'll find something to distract me from the above list so adding to it would probably be counterproductive.
It only leaves me to wish you all a happy and prosperous 2015.
Cheers.

Repeat On Success - Revisited

A couple of months ago I posted some information regarding a new feature within the Fairbot trading software, namely 'Repeat On Success'.

I was primarily interested in using it for in-play race markets, but today I thought I'd give it a whirl in the pre-race markets which proved very interesting. This is the first time I've got involved before the 'off' for months, if not years. I moved to the in-play markets as I just couldn't get the hang of pre-race trading despite many years of trying. I guess it just does not suit my style of trading.

I've not traded for a couple of months in fact due to work commitments and house renovations so I spent the afternoon in simulation mode just to get my eye back in if nothing else.

The image below shows the results while using £50 per bet. I was backing various runners with a 1 tick offset and apart from a losing spell mid-afternoon, I'm very happy with the results. A return of £67 for four hour's work is a reasonable return. More importantly, as this was done pre-race using stakes of £50, it is easily scalable.

More work/practice is needed but today's results are very encouraging. Give it a go yourself. You'll find videos demonstrating the 'Repeat On Success' feature in the video section or on my YouTube Channel.

Back Or Lay Picks 14th-16th Nov

With it being international weekend there's not many selections this weekend. As we're in a little bit of a sticky patch at the moment, perhaps that's a good thing. Still in profit though so here's hoping these pick things up a bit. Unfortunately it's doubtful there'll be much money in these markets - assuming they go in-play in the first place. Keep that in mind if getting involved and planning to trade out.

Back Or Lay Picks - Quarterly Summary Aug 2014-Oct 2014

We're now three months in to this year's Back Or Lay selections and it's time to do a quick summary of performance.

Bet TypeNo. Of BetsPts P&L
Lays10623.1
Backs34-13.6
No Bets7NA
Totals1479.5

With an ROI of 21.8% I've got to be delighted with the performance of the lays. The backs are another matter.

This whole strategy is based on what I perceive to be value which is partly why the odds range between 1.9 and 2.0 represents a 'No Bet'. It's a grey area that I've never been able to consistently address so I leave it.

I need to check back my records over past seasons to review the performance of the back bets to see if this is a one off, a season anomaly or symptomatic of something a little more consistent that I may have missed in previous years. Certainly if one had ignored my advice and opposed those back bets you'd be looking at a total of 32.6pts for the three months and not 9.5.

I'll carry on recording these as per the plan but if you are following these selections you may want to take note of the above and reduce stakes accordingly.

Back Or Lay Picks 16th-17th Sept

Four midweek selections for you with the obvious curious pick of Barcelona standing out. At odds of 1.07 as I type this, I simply think this is too short which is the basis for all the lay selections.

One should note that laying Barcelona with a view to trading out at a higher price will take some time as the price will be slow to increase during the game - assuming no goals - such is the strength of feeling for Barca.

MILTON K.
WHITEHAWK
NOTTM F.
BARCELONA

These picks should be backed if decimal odds at KO are 2.00 or over.
They should be laid if their odds are at 1.90 or under.

Repeat On Success - New Fairbot Feature

A new version of Fairbot was released a few days ago that has, amongst the usual bug fixes, tweaks and slights modifications, an interesting new feature called 'Repeat On Success'.

In short, if you configure settings so that when placing a bet Fairbot automatically places an 'Offset' closing bet, the 'Repeat On Success' function will stick the same trade into the market if the first trade is successfully completed. You can specify how many times it loops through this process.

This functionality may be useful in high liquidity slow moving markets like big race meetings such as Cheltenham or perhaps trading the draw pre-KO in top level football matches.

I was drawn to it as I thought it might prove useful when employing my in-running scalping technique, particularly in sprint horse races. To that end, I took myself off to the races today and played around in simulation mode. Thirty races later and I'd greened up in every race as you can see.

From this screenshot alone I think you can see that it has great promise and is well worth investigating further.

BTW, half way through the afternoon I recorded a video which is now available on YouTube.

Back Or Lay Picks 5th-7th Sept

With international matches on this weekend, I've only got four for your consideration this week.

BARNSLEY
BARNET
GRIMSBY
GLOUCESTER

These picks should be backed if decimal odds at KO are 2.00 or over.
They should be laid if their odds are at 1.90 or under.

Back Or Lay Picks 29th-31st Aug

What started off quite well has turned into a bit of a nightmare the past two weeks. The Back Or Lay picks are currently sitting nearly 10pts down. Not a comfortable position to be in but this is a marathon not a sprint so onwards and upwards (hopefully)...

TOTTENHAM
PORTSMOUTH

These picks should be backed if decimal odds at KO are 2.00 or over.
They should be laid if their odds are at 1.90 or under.

Back Or Lay Pick 26th Aug

Off to the second round of the Capitol One Cup for the midweek selections. Thankfully only one which hopefully a blessing in disguise after the shocking weekend.

BRENTFORD

These picks should be backed if decimal odds at KO are 2.00 or over.
They should be laid if their odds are at 1.90 or under.

Back Or Lay Picks 22nd-24th Aug

Another large selection for this weekend so I suspect these might cancel each other out as they did last weekend. I expect these lists to reduce in size a little once form settles down a bit.

Back Or Lay Picks 19th-20th Aug

The weekend turned out to be a bit of a non-event despite the large number of selections. A 0.7pt loss so no harm done.

The mid-week selections are a little more manageable with a handful of selections from south of the border.

Back Or Lay Picks 12th-14th Aug

Apologies for posting this with only an hour to go before many of these kick off. A combination of the longest list I think I've come across and me being late in from work.

As you can see, most of these are from the lower leagues and the first round of the Capital One Cup. Consequently, there's probably very little in the way of trading opportunities here as liquidity will be terrible, assuming the matches even go in play. As always though, I'll be recording these as straight punts.

Too Many Distractions

As any house owner will tell you, there's always something needing fixed, decorated, extended, constructed, cleaned or replaced. Maintenance is an ongoing process which, if done in a timely manner, will ensure everything is kept in its optimum condition without costing the earth.

The trouble is this takes a significant amount of time and it is very easy to get distracted. Trading is one of those distractions and with so much sport on the opportunities come thick and fast. It's all too easy to neglect the gardening in order to spend some time with the horses.

As long term readers of this blog will know, trading is a hobby for me. I have never had or will have any desire to do this full time in a professional capacity. Quite frankly, I find it rather boring at times and I doff my cap to those who have managed to make a career out of trading. So, like house maintenance, I also find it pretty easy to get distracted from trading which is why you may find a flurry of videos being uploaded then nothing for ages.

Does this mean I then get it on with the house maintenance? Hell no! As I have so many other interests there will always be something I'd rather be doing than weeding the garden.

For example, as a long term hifi enthusiast I've wanted to built my own amplifier for years but never had the opportunity or the facilities to do so. That's not the case anymore and hopefully will change fairly soon though I'll need to spend some some time getting myself back up to speed with amplifier design. It's been a while.

Similarly, last week I finally got around to buying a Raspberry Pi with the express intention of streaming music from my server through my hifi. Something I'm listening to as I type and it is working beautifully with the whole set up costing less than £50.

I have a friend whose husband spent thousands on a Linn system that does the same thing and which has given them much grief over the years. Having said that, it is working much better now that I've sorted their home network which was installed by the Linn system supplier - a case of a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

To cut a long story short, if you don't see any significant activity here, on Twitter or over on the Youtube channel it will be a fair bet I've been distracted.

Back Or Lay Picks 8th-10th Aug

The start of a new season and another year of back or lay picks.

As I've mentioned in the past, I'll be recording these as straight punts though they do lend themselves to a spot of trading - particularly the lays which are, in my opinion are generally too low and therefore not value from a backing point of view.

For the sake of consistency, the results are recorded based on the odds at the start of play as published on the BetExplorer site.

So, on to this opening weekend...

A couple of matches from Scandinavia but these should fall away soon as the main European leagues come on stream.

DUNDEE
MOLDE

These picks should be backed if decimal odds at KO are 2.00 or over.
They should be laid if their odds are at 1.90 or under.

Back Or Lay Performance For Aug 2013 - Jul 2014

That's a year come and gone and a new one about to start so time to post a quick summary of the return for the back or lay picks that I've made available on the blog as well as Twitter.

The graph below shows the cummulative P&L over the year from a standing start of £0. Each bet placed had a liability of £10 and despite showing a poor run mid-season it recovered well to give an ROI of 14.7%

These picks are often good trading material. I don't have records for those as I simply didn't record them. I was too often unable to sit around trading them or they involved selections where the markets had very little money available. You are more than welcome to trade them but I'll keep recording them as straight bets.

With a new season about to start, it's time to reset the counters and do it all over again.

As usual the picks will be posted on the Bet Your Life Sports Trading blog and I'll endeavour to mention on Twitter when they are available.

Back Or Lay Picks For 2nd-3rd Aug

Not long to wait for the start of the domestic and major European leagues and consequently more selections. In the meantime, it's off to Norway again for a solitary pick for this weekend...

AALESUND

These picks should be backed if you can get decimal odds of 2.00 or over. They should be laid if their odds are at 1.90 or under.

Back Or Lay Picks For 20th July

Off to Norway once more and a single pick for this weekend. It will not be long now until the main action starts in Europe and the selections will start coming thick and fast.

MOLDE

These picks should be backed if you can get decimal odds of 2.00 or over. They should be laid if their odds are at 1.90 or under.

A Quick Thank You

I've just noticed that subscribers to the Bet Your Life Sports Trading YouTube Channel (what a mouthful!) have reached 100 today. That figure was reached in roughly six months compared to 4-5 years to top 100 subscribers to the blog.

So I'd like to give a big thank you to all for subscribing. I hope you continue to find something of interest and useful as I throw ideas out there. If you have any ideas on videos you'd like me to do, please post a comment below. I can't promise anything but I'll see what I can do.

Thanks again.

Back Or Lay Picks 12-13th July

Pretty slim picking available which is only to be expected at this time of the year. Still, I've managed to find something in Norway for this weekend...

HAUGESUND

These picks should be backed if you can get decimal odds of 2.00 or over. They should be laid if their odds are at 1.90 or under.

Back Or Lay Picks 23rd June

It's been a bit quiet on the old Back or Lay front thanks to events in Brazil but I've managed to find something of interest in the Finnish league for tomorrow evening...

KUPS KUOPI

These picks should be backed if you can get decimal odds of 2.00 or over. They should be laid if their odds are at 1.90 or under.

Good Luck England

Apparently, England is playing in some big football tournament that kicks off today. One would hardly have noticed given the lack of enthusiasm.

As a Scot, I remember all too well the outrageously misplaced hysteria that swept the country in the run up to Argentina '78. It is in the nature of us Scots to be able to have a right old laugh about it now. While those south of the border quite rightly ridiculed us for it at the time they seem to completely miss their own hypocracy by doing the same thing. Since 1978 us living in God's country have been subjected to excessive amounts of unplaced English optimism (putting it mildly). It was always in your face, lets go on about 1966 yet again, fervour that, quite frankly only encouraged Scotsmen to make a point of supporting every team the English came up against.

There was a reason the Tartan Army sang chants like...

"We hate Jimmy Hill,
Jimmy Hill, he's a poof".

...and it had nothing to do with his sexual orientation. Football supporters are the same the World over and the Scots are no different. Simple folk who demand words no longer than two syllables in their chants and "condescending, self-righteous, arrogant big-chinned tosser" simply doesn't fit within that ethos.

It is the constant reference to past achievements (sorry, that should be singular) that really wind us Scots up. Winning the World Cup in 1966, great though that achievement was (and no the ball was never over the line) it doesn't mean that Sassenachs have a God given right to win it again. There's a perfectly good chance that football might never 'come home'. Which reminds me...

In the run up to every major international competition, that Baddiel, Skinner and Lightning Seeds football song is brought out. It is actually a clever bit of pop about the frustrations and disappointments of being a supporter of your national side (we know the feeling). As Euro 2000 approached out it came again only for my English then wife to reveal her ignorance by declaring she thought the chorus started "Three LINES on a shirt". This immediately prompted my then 9 year old son to offer these alternative lyrics (feel free to sing along - you know you want to)...

"Three lines on a shirt
Sponsored by Adidas
Thirty years of hurt
The Germans always beat us".

And with those four lines came the realisation that he didn't inherit a drop of English blood from his mother. It was a proud moment which still gets me all welled up inside. He never did break into the music business though he is following his dream of being a sport and fitness instructor, but I digress...

I have detected a significant difference with England's build up to Brazil 2014. Where are the ridiculous tabloid headlines? Where's the endless coverage of the 1966 final? Where are the articles that one minute build up expectation to unachievable highs then turn around and lambast everyone involved with the England team? Where's the WAGS, the party scandals, the infighting and the second rate football pundits? Speaking of Mark Lawrenson, please BBC don't have him on your coverage.

Could it be that after 48 years of hurt, the English have finally come to realise that to win a major competition takes a little more than throwing eleven overpaid primadonnas on to the pitch and crossing one's fingers and toes? Certainly the influence of Roy Hodgson cannot be underestimated. Hodgson is perhaps the best manager England have had for a long long time. Whatever the reason, the build up to this competition has been refreshingly different and a pleasant change for us north of the border.

Will this seemingly more mature and reasoned coverage encourage us Scots to lend some support to our cousins from the south?

Yes and no. Though we might not admit it in public, we want England to do well. The longer they stay in the competition, the more teams we are able to support in order to keep the tournament interesting. Although a mighty giggle would echo around the Scottish glens we'd rather England made it through the group stages. We'd hate to be denied the opportunity of yet another exit due to a penalty shoot out.

There's only one thing we'd hate more and that is England winning it - unlikely though that is. We'd hate it not because it wouldn't be a great achievement or ultimately be great for the game in the UK. No, we'd hate England lifting the World cup for one simple reason. We'd never hear the fucking end of it!

So, with all that said. here's one Scotsman wishing the England squad well. Just don't go winning the damn thing.

Timeout

Taking a self-imposed timeout for the next month. Partly because I burned much of my dosh on Betfair recently so I've withdrawn what was left.

I also need to concentrate on other things and having Betfair freely available to me everyday is just too much of a distraction. Hopefully I shall come back refreshed and raring to go.

In the meantime, I'll still be posting the Back or Lay picks as well as the Correct Score Dutch picks if anyone is interested.

Fugazi!

Is it just me or does anyone else think that Wayne Rooney's new pay deal is obscene?

Within the World's top leagues and in the English Premiership in particular there are an awful lot of people and organisations making a hell of a lot of money on the backs of what the top players do on the pitch. It is only right that those players be rewarded with some of that cash. Afterall, their 'career' is a relatively short one - unless your name is Ryan Giggs.

However, £300K per week? Footballers are hardly contributing to the development of the human race. Take away all football tomorrow and life will go on. Can anyone, irrespective of occupation and industry, justifiably earn that sort of money?

Many of the top football clubs are operating with huge debts yet still feed enormous salary bills. It's indicative of many of the distortions in society.

How can one justify those sort of payments with experts in other, in my view more import walks of life, earn a pittance in comparison? I'm thinking of scientists, engineers, nurses... the list is a long one and footballers would be near the bottom of the pile along with politicians and lawyers.

£300K per week? The world truly is fugazi.

Shameful

Whether it is Susan Boyle or Elise Christie and a whole host of others in between, when did it become acceptable in Britain for talentless mindless morons to abuse and criticise those that are successful?

The news that Christie has been the subject of abuse on Twitter is shocking. Although it has been reported that Elise has closed her Twitter account as a result, I sincerely hope that the police have been brought in. With the recent conviction of two Twitter bullies in the UK it seems to me that such morons should be relentlessly pursued until the message finally gets through their thick skulls.

The Internet is such a wonderful thing, but it makes it all too easy for such Neanderthals to think they can act with anonymity. They sooner they learn the opposite the better.

I won't hold my breath though.

A Fond Farewell

It is a sad day today. Goodbyes are never easy but it is time to say a fond farewell to the Chat Room.

Over the past few months, there has been only me with the occasional visitor popping in then buggering off after a few seconds without as much as a "bye your leave". "How wude", as JarJar Binks would say.

In recent years visitor numbers have dwindled to the point where it is no longer worth maintaining.

Though I cannot claim to be the first to introduce a chat room (I pinched the idea many moons ago from the website of those who developed the long defuncted BetIE trading software) there has been a chat room on the various incarnations of the Bet Your Life website long before they became popular with other trading and gambling sites.

Unlike the likes of TradeShark, Trading Football et al, I do not have a service or product to sell. I have no need to provide on-going support, training and mentoring. Users of such services will no doubt benefit greatly from the community that their respective chat room provides.

Strangely, those were the reasons I established a chat room in the first place. The idea that fellow traders could come and exchange ideas and just generally have somewhere to hangout and relieve what can be a somewhat lonely existence was something that I felt was sadly lacking and much needed.

Many others eventually copied the idea. Indeed, I helped a few set up their own and I'm delighted that these have grown into successful communities for their owners even while mine was withering on the vine.

So, goodbye old friend. It's been a blast.

In the meantime, if there is anyone out there that still wants to contact me you can either leave a comment on a post or follow me on twitter @BetYourLifeST. Alternatively, subscribe to the Bet Your Life YouTube Channel.

New Chat Room

Anyone who has tried access the chat room in recent weeks may have noticed that it has been extremely temperamental.

I used CentralChat as my IRC chat host and they've had on going problems for the past two or three months that meant the chat room hosted within the site frequently failed to work. As I use a dedicated IRC client, I hadn't noticed how bad it was until recently - I did wonder why no one was coming in for a natter LOL!

Tonight, I've moved to Geekshed.net and the Flash based chat room hosted within the site should be working OK now. Please note that the preferred method for accessing the chat room is to use dedicated IRC chat client software. That way, you never need to visit the site when you only want to visit the chat room.

If you wish to use a client and don't have one, you'll find plenty freely available on the Internet. Enter the following settings into your IRC chat client to connect to the Bet Your Life chat room...

IRC Server: irc.geekshed.net
Port: 6667
Chatroom: #betyourlife

Apologies for any inconvenience caused due to the chat room issues. They should all be resolved now so hope to see you there.

Win Without Trying

Some additional functionality in the latest release of Fairbot inspired me to revisit the horse markets recently. I know, I promised myself never to go near them ever again, but my curiosity got the better of me.

I've been playing in simulation mode with stakes of £100 and I guess it was inevitable that at some stage I'd forget to turn the damn thing on.

I only noticed after the first two races at Lingfield this afternoon that I was playing with real money. Fortunately both races were in profit and I find myself £75 richer without trying.

Simulation mode is now switched back on. Better not push my luck too far.

Fame at last!

A bit difficult to see from the image so here's the quote...

"Inspired by our revealing of how a customer following our bankers and naps made 30k a year or more for four years, another customer has staked 5% of his bank on all our daily naps and bankers since August 28th.

He won in September, October and December, with a slight loss in November. So his bank has increased by 74.2%. Our sage knows his onions...."
